Antifragile is a characteristic of people who manage well during changes, volatility, chaos or by chance.
Nassim Taleb (Economics), coined this term after an exhaustive study of unprecedented phenomena or “black swans”, unpredictable events of great impact.
We live in an unpredictable social, political and economic era. Brexit is just one of many recent examples. What seems impossible happens more and more often. To face it we need to add new professional strengths and gain business competitiveness and employment employability.
How can we go from being fragile to antifragile?
We need “emerging” skills: uncertainty management, versatility, flexibility, agility of learning and navigating naturally in disruption. Flow in this digital world “chaorganize”, mixture of chaos and organized.
No one is oblivious to “black swans.” Activating a personal improvement plan to face this “new normal” will be a great challenge for the talent of the coming years.
There is also a need for “anti-fragile leadership”: manage not only with data and certainties but with intuition and vulnerability. Listen and facilitate more. Talk and direct less from top to bottom. Design a strategic plan of people management that enhances the business plan.
Leaders with perspective that illuminate the “black box” of the future and create an exciting common vision where each collaborator grows and has a positive contribution.
The challenge starts now. Transform ourselves; increase our self-knowledge; open more to the outside; anticipate trends and needs and innovate to respond. A renewed way of living and working for those who embrace the future with realistic optimism, without false expectations and daily effort.
In a world plagued with obvious and latent risks, let’s focus on illusion versus fear as a lever for motivation and exponential learning. So we will be anti-fragile when the next flood of uncertainties arrives.
Many “everyday heroes” already show us daily that they are prepared with their attitude that makes a difference. Let’s bet on the antifragility in this era of light and shadow and enjoy the journey.
