We need balance, energy and focus
Today, a professional must have healthy habits incorporated to maintain and sustain a high performance in this demanding context.
Like competitive sport, the world of work requires a comprehensive balance, a high level of energy and a focused mind.
The opportunity that represents the challenge of Coronavirus
The Coronavirus crisis has once again reminded us the importance of healthy habits for our personal and professional lives.
Confinement, uncertainty, a flurry of bad news, stress, and natural concern for the future have tested our mood and daily habits. When we find ourselves in a moment of great confusion, this combination of ingredients can harm our performance and the clarity of our ideas and decisions. In that case, healthy habits will be an effective antidote.
Habits for productivity and well-being
Taking care of the body, eating, resting, managing our stress, meditating and having an inspiring personal purpose that goes beyond us, are examples of good basic daily acts for a better, more sustainable and fuller quality of life.
Bellow, you will find the 9 habits of Sustainable High Performance model, a progressive, orderly and integrated process for the development of personal and professional effectiveness.
The Sustainable High Performance (ARS) model
The ARS model consists in 9 habits divided into three levels: Well-being, Self-leadership, and Leadership.
The 9 habits of the ARS move us progressively from the roots of a correct physical, mental and emotional balance that brings us Wellbeing, towards the efficiency of Self-leadership to reach the leadership synergy.
People who have neglected body, mind, and emotions cannot choose effective Self-leadership, and people who do not have self-control or Self-leadership cannot choose sustainable Leadership over time.
If we want to reap the fruits of Leadership, we must work on Self-leadership and sustain ourselves in the strong and deep roots of Well-being
Healthy habits focus on the Well-being level. Our body can be a source of suffering if it is tense, poorly cared for and sick or can be a source of satisfaction if we keep it flexible, strong and healthy.
The 3 well-being habits are: taking care of the body, controlling the mind and managing emotions. Because…
- How can we work effectively, if we feel without energy, with back pain or without having slept enough? This is the physical aspect of habit 1: Taking care of the body.
- How can we work effectively if our minds are scattered, confused, and not thinking clearly? This is the mental aspect that corresponds to habit 2: Control the mind.
- How can we work effectively if our mood is negative with feelings of anxiety, impatience, or anger? This is the emotional aspect of habit 3: Managing emotions.
Incorporating healthy habits into an organization will have an impact on the well-being and productivity of its workers.
According to studies by the European Network for Promotion and Health at work: For every euro invested in promoting employee health, the company recovers between 2.5 and 4.8 euros of profit in absenteeism.
Some companies like Henkel, Mahou-Sant Miquel and Nike have already established measures to promote healthy habits for years, such as: relaxation spaces, special menus, gyms or coaching services to help their professionals make the necessary changes in their lives.
The healthy company achieves three important aspects:
Healthy companies: what benefits do they get and what do they do differently?
More and more organizations are betting on being healthy due to the clear benefits it provides for our teams and the business (greater happiness, more sustainable performance, more innovation and productivity, less absenteeism …). And we are sensitizing our teams to these good habits.
The change that involves incorporating healthy habits
Like any change management, this is not so much about acquiring technical knowledge, but about evolving in our mentality.
- It will explain convincingly what habits benefit us and what habits harm us in our overall health, although sometimes its adverse effects will only be detected in the medium term.
- This means finding a why and a why-for for each person to execute these changes that will sometimes be difficult.
- It will clarify the benefits for the individual in the short and long term so that they take responsibility for their well-being and performance.
And how we do it?
To do this, we must build an attractive story, identify ambassadors who help us influence, empathize with the situation of each person, be patient and seek the most appropriate levers at all times.
Accompany, support and challenge in the right doses, externally exploring good ideas that can help us be more effective and inspiring.
A long-term process
This transformation of behaviors and inertias will not be immediate, it will have ups and downs and will only be sustainable if each person assumes the reins of his life with maturity.
Incorporating healthy habits is a good challenge for organizations, leaders and professionals who take this approach as a facilitator of their future success and well-being.
